This poem describes me to a T.

Except maybe the "little" part.

I've lived my entire thirty-thirteen years with curly hair. Not kinky curly. But not wavy. CURLY. I've wanted my entire thirty-thirteen years to have STRAIGHT hair. Long, straight, blonde hair. I've never had it.

I've tried. I've bought straighteners. I have a CHI. I have hot curlers. But I've never really had straight hair. The CHI works pretty well. It works for me until I walk outside. I do live in Georgia, and the air can be quite humid. I grew up in Coastal Georgia, where the air is always humid. Therefore, my hair has always been curly.

Or, to be honest, my hair has usually been frizzy.

I spent my younger years with short hair. This was my mother's way to deal with my hair. She,too, has curly hair, and she knew it would be easier to deal with my hair if it was short. When I got old enough to take care of my own hair, I decided to let it grow.

Sometimes, I had nice ringlets. Other times, I looked like Janis Joplin. My hair was always a crap-shoot. I never knew what it was going to do. I have lots of barrettes and scrunchies in case I need to pull it back.

Fortunately, I received an invitation to Ravelry.

I joined, and I began to peruse groups. I found a group that really interested me. "Crafters with Naturally Curly Hair." Who would have thought? Others like ME?

So, I join the group, and start reading the message board. And there is a whole world out there that I never knew. The CURLY GIRL world.

I found out about a book, The Curly Girl's Handbook, and a website, www.naturallycurly.com. I am learning what to do with my hair. I now know that I am a CURLY GIRL, and that I'm not alone.

I'm learning how to work with my curls. And to allow my curls to work with me. And I am thrilled.

I have been knitting. In fact, I've been knitting quite a lot. I am teaching a self-contained fifth grade class this year, and decided to knit them all a Christmas gift. I was going to make them all a wreath, but didn't like the sample, so I decided upon a bookworm for each of them. I allowed them to select a color, based on leftover Sugar'n'Cream that I had, and I set out to knit 27 bookworms. I used Sarah Bradberry's pattern, but altered it to include a chained tail, and a tassle on the end. I also personalized each of them with the initials of every student on the end of the tail. I glued googley eyes on every bookworm. They ended up being precious.

What I Love About Badcaul

I've discovered a new passion. I now understand what so many sock knitters are raving about. The toe-up two at a time magic loop sock. Wow!

I love not having to kitchener the toe. This pattern (Badcaul by Anna Bell) has a Turkish Cast-On. When I started these babies a year ago, I remember being totally amazed by this cast on.

I love this yarn. It is Step in Grass. I got it from Margaret last year for St. Patrick's knitting. It has jojoba in the yarn. It is so very soft.

I'm coming up on the heels. I know that I'll do one at a time, but I'm looking forward to a new challenge.

What I love best is that I'll finish both socks at once. I will be able to bind them off and put them on.

I may have to do all socks this way from now on.

Low Country Boil

This is a close up of the Double Eyelet Rib that is used for the Summer Solstice Sock. I really like the way this turned out.

I am not currently knitting a second sock. I'm taking a break from shrimp.

February Knitting

February began with an abnormal mammogram. Not mine, because despite the fact I'm thirty-thirteen, I haven't had one yet---Don't fret though, it's scheduled for March 21. It was my mother. And after a small and large needle biopsy, it was determined that it was breast cancer. She was given the choice of a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. She chose the latter.

I went down the 18th of February. We drove to Jax on President's Day and checked in to the Wyndham on the St. John's River. We had a fabulous dinner at Ruth's Chris Steak House, and went back to the room to get to bed early for our hosiptal stay.

We were at Pre-Op at 8:15, and I began to knit fish. We were put in a holding room, and I knit fish. My brother came, and I knit fish. My cousins came, and I knit fish. We waited, and I knit fish. Mamma was finally taken into surgery at 2:30, and still, I knit fish. Her surgery went well, and only took an hour. The tumor was very small, and contained, and her lumph nodes were clear. She'll see an oncologist later this month, but we don't anticipate any chemo or radiation. Prayers really do work.

Mamma was able to go home on Wednesday afternoon. I headed to Fuzzy Mabel on Thursday morning to get some yarn to knit her a Tit Bit. I brought home 3 different silks, and a bamboo. She picked the bamboo. I finished it Thursday night, and she wore it on Friday. I'd love to show a picture, but I don't want my mother flashing her "knitty" (as she calls it!) Wouldn't that be a bit pornographic?

I went back to Fuzzy Mabel on Friday. Cynthia is relocating to Lancaster, SC, and was having a big sale. I went in to get Mamma some needles for a prayer shawl she's knitting (2 days after a mastectomy), and as I'm checking out, I spy this:

It is IsleDyllic Dream handpainted sock yarn in Low Country Boil. I met the artist in the shop, and just had to bring it back to Atlanta. It really looks like home to me.

I finally started a pair of socks with my Low Country Boil last week. They are the Summer Solstice Socks from The Sock Calendar.

The leg is a Double Eyelet Rib. I love the way it is working up. I'm using DPNs after a long hiatus from them, and am really enjoying using them again. I'm planning on wearing these, so no SSS this go-round. I'm off to knit!

It's Pre-Game Knitting!

Here is the first Warm Up America square I completed for Super Knit Sunday. I used Red Heart Kids in Bikini. It's a little like knitting dishcloths, only with acrylic yarn. Since the yarn was so busy, I decided to do a straight stockinette.

These are the other colors of Red Heart that I got for squares. I think I may be a little ambitious. I got Red Heart Kids in Lime, Orange, Yellow, Pink, and Happy. I'm doing the solid colors in some type of pattern. I'm doing a small gingham with the pink. I'm just kind of playing a little with the solid colors.

There are a couple of other variegated Red Heart Kids that I may end up getting, too. I'll try to make at least one strip of seven squares.

Super Knit Sunday

A Bad Blogger

I've been a bad blogger. I haven't posted in 2 months. I can no longer access Blogger from work, so, I'm out of touch!

My cycle was a bust. I got pregnant. Saw that elusive second line. And then it was gone. Who else but me. My beta started at 10, and went down from there. We did a hysteroscopy and everything is fine.

I have one frozen embryo. I'll transfer it in the spring. I'll let you know if it works.

I've been knitting. I knit Argosy for a friend's Christmas present. I'll post a photo later. I'm sorking on Danica for a late present.

2 Week Wait Knitting

I decided I needed something special to knit for my 2 week wait. I decided on this in Ireland. I thought that the green would be soothing, and it also shows growth. So, while I hopefully have a baby or 2 growing inside of me, my afghan will be growing as well. I ordered it today, with a 3 day delivery. I hope it gets here soon. I'll need something to do while I wait.

My mom is coming up, and will stay for Thanksgiving. We're ordering from Honey Baked Ham, I think, and getting a Corn Casserole from Publix. I had a sample and it is great. It will only be Brad, Mamma, and me. I don't see a need to cook. I'm going to put myself on bedrest after the transfer anyway.

Fertilization

11 eggs were retrieved yesterday. 10 of them were mature. 5 of them fertilized. The embryologist said he had hoped for 6, so 5's not that off. I was a little disappointed, but then I thought of my first cycle, when I had zero fertilization. 5 is 500 times better than 0 (IMHO). I will go in for the transfer on Saturday morning, unless I get an early morning call. The embryologist said that they would call by 8:15 if we're going to push it back to a five day transfer. I'll be happy either way.

I'm working on my fall transfer second sock, the Jaywalker. I'm decreasing the gusset now, and have to finish the foot.

I'm expecting my medals by tomorrow, so I'll have the blessings of the Saints for this transfer. I need all the blessings I can get!

Retrieval Day

Brad is on his way to Woodstock to drop off the little swimmers. He's called me twice already. He's supposed to pick up some instructions for me, so he called about that, and then to find out which way to go on I-285. I'm not worried at all about his part in the whole deal.

I'm not too worried about the retrieval, either. My donor had some really good follicles, and I'm sure we'll get a good amount of eggs. I've double checked about ICSI-ing the eggs, and was reassured that all of them would be ICSI-ed.

The next worry, after the retrieval, is fertilization. Last time, as you may recall, we had ZERO fertilization, and rescue ICSI was performed on the eggs. Rescue ICSI really doesn't work very often. So, I'm a little worried about that. And then I get to worry with whether or not the fertilized eggs grow.

So many worries, so MUCH time to worry about them.

I'm not Catholic, but I did grow up with a Catholic best friend. I went to Mass with them a lot. I have a thing for the saints. I guess I'm a little superstitious, I don't know, but I've gotten into the saints.

I went to Discount Catholic Products and ordered new medals. I've been wearing a St. Gerard and St. Catherine medal for about a year (or more), but my chain recently broke. You pray to St. Gerard for motherhood, and St. Catherine to protect against miscarriage. I wanted some new medals, so I ordered this St. Gerard, and this St. Catherine. Then my mom's friend Mrs. Mraz told her that I needed St. Anthony because he's the saint against infertility, so I ordered this. I decided that Brad needed a little Saint action, too, so I got a St. Joseph for him. St. Joseph is the patron saint of fathers. So I should have plenty of protection from the saints.

My mom is coming up here Friday. She'll take me for the transfer. My husband will be a nervous wreck. Last time, he built a wall while we were gone. Who knows what he'll do this time!

The Final Countdown

I got a call today from my nurse at the clinic. My donor will trigger tonight. The retrieval will be Wednesday. Brad has to go in at 9:30 on Wednesday. The donor has 11 follicles bigger than 15mm and 6 more right behind that. I'll get a call on Wednesday to see how many eggs were retrieved, and then I'll get a call on Thursday to see how many fertilized.

I'm a nervous wreck. I guess with my first cycle, I didn't know anything could go wrong. Now that I know what can go wrong, I'm terrified that it will.

My transfer is tentatively set for Saturday, but could be pushed back to Monday.

I think I'm going to be sick!

A Knitted Gift

I decided this time to make something for my donor rather than buying a gift. The charm bracelet didn't work, so I figured since she is giving me part of her, that I'll give her part of me.

I decided to make her a little spa set to pamper herself after the retrieval.

I made some washcloths out of Cotton-Tots rather than Sugar'N Cream. They are so very soft. The two in the front are from the book Dishcloths From The Heart. The one in the back on the left is The Mason Dixon Dishcloth, and the one on the right is from Rhonda White's Spa and Bath Sets to Knit.
I made this box from Mason Dixon Knitting. I used 4 strands of Patons Classic. 2 in Winter White and 2 in Natural Mix.
This is a headband out of Cotton Tots. It's from Rhonda White's Book, too.
This is a Dishcloth I included, since it says "Thanks" on it. Nice and Thanksgiving-y. It is from Enid Danforth's Yahoo Group.
And finally, a soap sack, from Rhonda White's book. The washcloth and soap sack have little polka-dots on them. I told my mom that they look like eggs.

I added some goodies from Bath and Body Works in Warm Vanilla Sugar, and took it to the doctor's office yesterday morning. Someone will take it to the main office, and my donor will get it the day of the retrieval.

Everything is going as planned. My midcycle ultrasound was good. My lining is cooperating. I have no fluid like I did before. My E2 level is a little over 1000. The next hurdle is seeing how the donor responds to her meds. Fingers crossed, everything will be great.

The Town Criers left a comment on a previous post praising Marcia Cross for speaking up on behalf of infertiles everywhere. And I started thinking about celebs who've spoken out about infertility. I know that this is not a thorough list, but let's call it a work in progress.....

1. Marcia Cross--Love Her! She was seen coming out of a SoCal fertility clinic. Pregnant with twins at 44. Talks about IF.

2. Courteney Cox--Love Her! She's openly discussed her struggles with infertility. Has ACA's like I do. Says she used IVF to get pregnant, and will use IVF again.

3. Brooke Shields--Love Her Two Times! Not only did she admit to IVF (seven times before becoming pregnant with her first baby) she also admits to postpartum depression, and for using meds to overcome it.

4. Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels--Love Them! You know they had to use ART. It's a given. Actually an anonymous donor, not David Crosby this time.

But what about those mommies who give birth to twins in their upper 40's. We're led to believe that these ladies had NO medical assistance! I don't think necessarily that these ladies should come out and say that they used donor eggs, or what not, but I do think that they should fess up to maybe having trouble getting pregnant, and maybe using ART to get pregnant.

There is nothing wrong with being infertile. There is nothing wrong with using ART to get pregnant. What is wrong is leading people to believe that fertility lasts well into your 40's (and early 50's) . It may for some people, but for the general population, it does not.

Socktober isn't over yet!

I've been itching all month to knit some socks. I finally found the sock yarn I wanted at The Yarn Garden, and have started a pair of Jaywalkers to celebrate Socktoberfest. I'm using Trekking XXL in colorway 161. They are just so Autumnal that I had to knit them. I really hope this loverly doesn't join my other single socks because of my Second Sock Syndrome. I really really want to finish these. They may be my new transfer socks.

National Infertility Awareness Week

Today is the first day of National Infertility Awareness Week. The Town Criers have some great ideas for spreading infertility awareness. One of the ideas listed is to blog about infertility.

This is my story.

I used to be fertile. I used to get pregnant at the drop of a hat. I could get pregnant on birth control pills. Carrying a baby, though, was a different story. I could get pregnant, but I couldn't stay that way. Finally, after 5 diagnosed (and who knows how many other) miscarriages, I was tested and tested positive for Anticardiolipin Antibodies. So, I'm told that I can get and stay pregnant with the help of heparin.

I go for a while with no cycle, so I'm prescribed Provera, to jumpstart Auntie Flow, and then Clomid to jumpstart to ol'ovaries. Well, provera doesn't work. Auntie Flow refuses to visit. I take the Clomid anyway, and the ol' ovaries are just that. OLD.

Tests are run, and I'm told that I'm post menopausal. I truly believe, though, that the FSH number that I was given has to be overly inflated. Regardless, I would not be getting pregnant without medical intervention.

Now, I was one of those women who felt that they could get pregnant whenever they wanted, and medical intervention was a sign of weakness. I was truly scared to go to the RE for fear of what they might tell me. I really waited a long time to go. I kept thinking, probably because of celebs in their 40's having babies, that I could do it on my own. I spent a fortune every month on hpt's. I took herbs. I bought the big fertility monitor. I didn't ovulate.

Once I was told about my FSH level, I called and made an appointment with the RE. I was told about the wonders of Donor Eggs. I have done one DE cycle that was not successful. I am beginning another cycle.

People need to be aware of infertility. Out of all of my friends growing up and in college, I can only think of 2 who did not have problems getting pregnant. Infertility can touch everyone to some degree. It can be heartbreaking. It can be devastating.

Hopefully, in my case, with the help of medical assistance, it can be overcome!

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Brad is in Sarasota, so my mother and I will be lighting 5 candles tonight to remember our 5 angels.

The doctors have determined that my losses are because of Anticardiolipin antibodies, which cause micro-clots to form, and the baby dies. Now I will use a blood thinner to prevent this from happening again, providing that I become pregnant again.

Happy Belated Blogoversary!

A year ago, October 1, I started this blog. I had (and still have) no idea what I'm doing. I have a lot of knitting content, and some infertility stuff, too.

When I started, I was really into making helmetliners. This is something that I should probably start again. I just sent 3 off to Iraq. The husband of one of my co-workers was deployed in August. She sent him a care package, and I sent the helmetliners in that. I like knowing where they go, and I'll be able to get feedback as to what I can do to make them better.

Then, it being October and all, I got into Yorick, and had to make him.

Here it is October again, and I have nothing in the works. So, I thought I'd peruse through the Knitty archives, and have decided to do these.

There is another cool pumpkin that I'd like to do at Magknits. I didn't have enough yarn at home, so I started the Knitty one, first.

The New Cycle

I'm getting ready to start a new DE cycle. I've been matched with a donor, and she looks quite like my brother did when he was a baby. We can only see baby pics, but I think that's okay. One of the girls on FF just found out that her cycle worked. I only hope that I can follow in her footsteps.

I'm starting my Lupron next Monday, so things will be moving along after that. They have increased my estrogen quite a bit based on the results of my second mock cycle. Hopefully my lining will cooperate. Dr. B. told me that I had a stubborn uterus during that mock cycle. I hope that it will behave for the real thing.

I was a little apprehensive about my donor at first. I had asked for curly hair and green eyes. She has straight hair and brown eyes. But I have been looking at children and their parents a lot lately, and have seen some mothers/fathers and children who look nothing alike. I started thinking about my cousin, who is very fair. She has blonde hair, and is whiter than I am, and I'm pretty white. She married a guy who is Italian and Portuguese. Needless to say, he has dark hair and nice tanning olive skin. (To us very fair folks, to be able to tan would be a dream come true...My sun cycle consists of burn, blister, peel, freckle) The whole time Debbie was pregnant with her son, we just knew he would be dark like Tony. He is the blondest thing you've ever seen. Her daughter is the same way. So I guess it really doesn't matter how my donor looks. What does matter is if she produces some good quality eggs that will grow to blastocyst, and will snuggle in when they are transferred back to me. She has just done a successful cycle, so hopefully I'll be the next.

Heading for Home

I went home this weekend. My friend Elaine is an interior designer, and designed a showcase house for Southern Accents. The Big Event was this weekend at Hampton Island, and I went with my cousin, my brother and his wife, and my mom and "older sister." I got to see Elaine, which is always a treat, and I also got to see my forever friend, Katy. Three Dog Night was the entertainment at this event. We sat on the lawn and were eaten alive by bugs (one of the hazards of coastal Georgia). The house was fabulous, as was the Big Event. The food was great, and we really enjoyed ourselves.

It was also my daddy's birthday. We went over there for supper, and I took my grandmother. We had to wait a while for my brother and his wife to get there, and so we drank some margaritas. Apparently, my Mimi had too many. We finished eating, and my brother started playing the piano. The next thing I know, Ellen, my sister-in-law, runs in looking for a camera, because Mimi and Wayne were dancing! I'll have to post pictures.

I had a little SEX while I was there. My Stash Enhancing e-Xpedition included trips to both The Stitchery of St. Simons, where I got some Cotton Chenille, a set of Denise Needles, and a Knitwhits kit for the Ripley Hat. Then I went to Fuzzy Mabel and got some needles, and some Euroflax Linen to make a hand towel for my mother's bathroom.

This is the Circle of Fun rug from MDK. I used 2 strands of SnC on 10 1/2's. The short rows are a lot of fun to knit, and it really turns out cool. I used Sugar and Cream Cream doubled for the cream sections and Country Sage Ombre and Jute for the variegated sections. I'm working on the first outer band in Cream. I've knit about 3 1/2 years, so I'm half way there. I may or may not do another outer band. If I do, I'm going to do it just in Jute, double stranded. I'm going to use it in my bathroom. My Abosrba was just too big, and the double stranded SnC is a perfect weight to throw over the side of the tub.

The Common Thread Project

The Common Thread Project is a fabulous idea. I read about it on Stirrup Queens and Sperm Palace Jesters. It began as Operation Pomegranate, and has evolved now to the Common Thread Project. I hope that infertile women will take up the thread and band together. It would be nice to know when you're in line at Publix if the pregnant lady in fromt of you suffered from infertility.

I'm stopping at Hobby Lobby today to buy some DMC #814. I think I'll make a friendship bracelet with it, if I can remember how to do it.

I'm a big mouth, and I'll tell anyone about my journey with infertility. I don't do it to make anyone feel sorry for me. I just think that the common folk need to know how prevalent infertility is. When you share your story, it is amazing how many IF's come out of the woodwork.

My second mock cycle is over, and I finally have a decent lining. So, we now know the protocol to use to build my lining.

I have accepted another donor. I've seen a baby picture and she looks just like my brother. My mother and brother agree. We won't be cycling until October. I'm going to try to get healthier in the meantime. I've joined a gym, and I'm going everyday after school. I haven't lost much weight yet, but I'm sure I will.

I am hopeful that this time will work.

August Mid Month KAL

This is the dishcloth I'm knitting for the August Mid Month KAL from the Monthly Dishcloth KAL Yahoo Group. We were told to use a solid and a variegated that matched, so I used Sugar'n Cream Neptune Ombre and Light Blue. But I didn't think there was enough contrast. You can barely even see the pattern.

So I cast on again, using the Neptune Ombre with solid white. I like it much better now. I have finished through day 3 of the pattern, and I'm ready for day 4.

Waving Frog Dishcloth

I've knit three more dishcloths and have a ballband on the needles. This pink one is from the Monthly Dishcloth KAL. It was the May KAL and is a flower. I used Sugar and Cream Hot Pink.

This red one is the Mid May KAL and is a red dress to promote awareness for heart disease in women. I thought it was appropriate to knit, since my mother had a "little" heart attack in May. I will be giving this one to her.

I finished this dragonfly last night. It is from Purple Duckie. I used Sugar and Cream Hot Purple. I love the way the picture shows the pattern.

I'll start the Mid August KAL today. We need 2 colors, a variegated and a solid, and we'll be doing some slipped stitches. It is not the ballband pattern. It may be some type of basketweave. I have my colors picked out and ready to go. I'll start when I get home today!

This blue dishcloth is the August KAL from the Monthly Dishcloth KAL Yahoo group. I love this concept. We get a piece of the pattern each day, until we're through. Now I'm going back and knitting the previous KAL's I missed.
This orange one is the pumpkin from last October's KAL.

The pink is a watering can from April.
The red one is an apple from last September.

I've gone a little dishcloth crazy. I have a pile of them. And I keep on knitting.

South of the Mason Dixon, Part Two

These are two bibs I made for some coo-workers. The blue was done in Lion Brand Cotton --a denim colorway, and the pink and purple in Peaches and Cream Pink and Lilac. I have added buttons, and given away the blue. The mommy of the pink is on leave for a while.

I made this Bib O'Love and Baby Genius Burp Cloth for a friend of my mother's daughter. I used SnC Swimming Pool for the bib, and Hot Blue and White for the burp cloth.

This is my second Ballband dishcloth. I gave the first one to my Mimi (Southern for Grandma) before I could take a picture. This one is SnC Over The Rainbow and Hot Pink.

These are some Mitered Squares that I plan to send to Jennifer. The pink and green is Sinfonia. The red and black (Go Dawgs!) and taupe and blue are Paton's Grace.

Absorba is finished. I finished it Thursday. I had planned on using it in my bathroom, but it turned out a little big. I have ladies size 8 Crocs on the corner for size comparison.

I'm still Mason-Dixoning. I am working on a Ballband Warshrag, and have just finished a Bib O' Love for the granddaughter of a friend of my mom's. I used Sugar and Cream "Swimming Pool" colorway, and I love the way it turned out. I ended up knitting the strap long to button in the front. I'm going to find a cute fishie button. I'm working on a Burp Cloth for that same baby. I'm using turquoise and white.

My nephews put those nylon loops to good use. I returned 2 packages to Joanns, but had to open one to discover that they were nylon. We've been making pot holders. Each nephew made one. I'll post photos later. I'm on the isalnd with no cord for my camera.

Mason Dixon Mania!

I've got the fever! Mason Dixon Mania. It is treated with tons of kitchen cotton and some really fun and easy patterns.

I got the book on June 30, at Why Knot Knit. Monica, the shop owner, actually went to her car and got her copy for me. I then traveled to Hobby Lobby for some $0.99 Sugar and Cream. I wanted to make Absorba. I ended up with Ecru, Soft Ecru, Jute, and Natural Ombre. And set to work on Absorba (4 stranded on 15's)

I kept looking through the book, and became intrigued by the Superfancy Potholder Loop Rug. So, I go over to JoAnn's and get some potholder loops, and some Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton. The loops turn out to be nylon, and I wanted cotton, so I went back to Hobby Lobby for some Cotton Jersey Potholder loops and some Superfancy Pink Sparkly knitting needles (Size 35). I got home and looped de loops, and ended up with this ginormous ball of yarn. (Absorba is in the background)

I started knitting that superfancy rug, and it kinda hurt my super wimpy hands. (I have a titanium plate and screws in one of my fingers, and it can get quite sore.) It was hard to knit on those straight needles. So, I found a 40% off coupon and headed back to JoAnns to return the nylon loops, and find some 35 circulars. The potholder rug is slow going now, but much easier with the circular needles.

One of the balls of Lion Cotton I got was "Americana", so I had to use it to make the Mason Dixon Washcloth for the 4th of July.

Literally. Dyeing. I went to the Firefly Frenzy sale at Joanns and got some Fisherman's Wool with a 50% off coupon. I washed my wool in mild soapy water.

Put it in microwavable containers to which various colors of KoolAid had been added.

And nuked it for 2 minute intervals until the water was clear.

This is my yarn that I wound into hanks before dyeing it. I got 9 hanks from that big skein.

A co-worker of mine is a fairly new knitter, and she came in last Friday with the best book, Bags-A Knitter's Dozen. I fell in utter love with the Market Squares Bag, and proceeded to head out to All That Yarn to buy the supplies to make this fabulous bag. I ended up with Cascade 220 in varying shades of pink and green. I'm currently working on the 8th tier. I've actually been working on it a whole week without starting a new project. Of course, it interrupted the Geisha Socks, but I'll finish those as well.

Sock Yarn A Plenty

I paid a visit to Cynthia and Ouida at Fuzzy Mabel while I was on the Island. Look what was on sale! Actually, the Regia Cotton 4-ply and one of the others. I found the pattern of my dreams at Spun Magazine. All last year, I searched for a pattern for Flip Flop socks. And I couldn't really find one. I found one for mittentoe socks, but I didn't think it was what I really wanted.

So, I'd gone online to Fuzzy Mabel, and knew Cynthia had the Regia Surf colors on sale, and I knew I had to get some, but I had to find a pattern. I googled anklets or something similar, and finally found the sock pattern of my dreams.

I have the hobo bag in the washer now, along with the bucket bag I made for Camie at school. I still have to work on Camie's i-cord, but, the bag will be felted. So I have my Surf color in the pink, orange , and yellow out and I'm ready to wind it. I think I'm going to do the Geisha Socks first.

My Secret Pal

I've tried and tried to post pictures, but my computer is not cooperating. I got home from 10 days on St. Simons, and while I was gone, I received my final package from my Secret Pal. And it was a doozy!

First, there was yarn that she personally spunEdited: Kim did not spin this yarn, but bought a cone of this yummy sock yarn! . Then, a basketweave sock pattern and some yummy sock yarn.

I got a book, Decorative Knitting,and a bookmark, some Chai Tea and Suisse Mocha cappucino, and a whole Burt's Bees kit with lotion, body oil, lip balm, hand creme, salve, and cuticle creme(perfect for knitters) and foot creme. It came in an eco-friendly bag and was just precious.

Slacker

I have been so slack. I've been a slack knitter, a slack blogger, a slack teacher, and a slack wife. I never finished Lady Eleanor. I have 2 skeins of yarn left to knit, and I haven't touched it. I started some socks for St. Patrick's Day, but they won't be finished. I haven't posted in almost a month. I've been a horrible mean teacher, and I pick up take out every night.

Why? Depression. The transfer didn't work. I had been off of my Lexapro for about a month. I was low. After I found out that the transfer didn't work, I called in to my Doctor and got my meds again. I am much better.

The transfer---the cycle---what happened? The eggs didn't fertilize. They tried rescue icsi. It was successful in initial fertilization, but the embies didn't continue to divide in the lab, so the transferred embies probably didn't grow inside of me. We will try again. I've been offered a scholarship cycle where the costs are a little lower. I told the donor egg coordinator to go ahead and start looking!

The Transfer and the Socks

I had 4 6-celled embryos transferred Sunday at about 12 PM.

I finished my Transfer Socks the night before. I've been bed-resting, and wearing them, along with my Lambie Pajamas (Nick and Nora's Counting Sheep).

I'm working on Lady E, and am about on the 25th tier. It's looking good. I'll post a picture later.

Lady Eleanor Pacing

I've started working on Lady Eleanor. I cast on Friday, and am trying to complete 3 tiers a day. I'm on tier 10, so I guess I'm behind. Just as long as I finish on time. I want that gold medal.

I love working with the Noro, and so far have found no knots. I am re-winding it, and that may help.

On the baby front, I'm still in a holding pattern. My donor is doing great, and will probably get her trigger today. The retrieval will be Thursday, and Brad will go in then, as well. I'll go back in Friday for another ultrasound. Everything else depends on my lining.

Lots of love to my secret pal! I got the best softest baby alpaca from her! Wow! I'll post a pic later.

I got a package yesterday from FuzzyMabel. 10 skeins of Noro Silk Garden in #50. Beautiful.

I also started a pair of socks on Wednesday. I'm using Cascade Fixation. The pattern is from the Sock Calendar Book. It's the Valentine Sock. I want to wear them for the transfer. So they're my prayer socks. They are pink, of course.

The Brainwash Bag has one side completed, and the strap is finished as well. I have to finish the other side, sew it together, and felt it.

So, I'm checking my email during lunch, and what do I find, but a message from kpixie with a gift voucher! A birthday sur-see from my secret pal. Now I really don't know what I want to get. I'm thinking about the mitered bag seriously. But found a pattern for a maternity poncho that converts to a baby blanket knit in Karaoke. I know it's jumping the gun, but should I let my vouchers wait, and work on Lady Eleanor for the Olympics and then see what happens, or spend my vouchers. Decisions, decisions!

I did have a good birthday. Got money. Got a printer for my digi-cam (a little Kodak Printer Dock Plus...way cool). My mommy is sending me some Noro Silk Garden in #50 for Lady Eleanor.

Go to Doctor today to learn to give myself the progesterone injections and tomorrow for my ultrasound (baseline) and bloodwork. Then Thursday I'll start the estrogen. I'll go back on Feb 10 for midcycle ultrasound to see how my lining is progressing. This process is moving right along! Wish me luck!

I am in love! I went to All That Yarn today and got pink and green Cascade 220. I'm going to do it in reverse, with pink being the main color, and green the contrasting color. Is it not just fab? It reminds me of Austin Powers. Yeah, Baby.

Setting the Date

I've talked again with Bernadette, and she has given me dates for when I start my meds, and when I will receive the transfer. This is moving a lot faster than I expected. I'll start taking Estrace, Baby Asprin and PreNatals on February 1st. I'll also have my baseline ultrasound. Then I'll do the midcycle ultrasound on the 10th of February, and the transfer will take place sometime between the 15th and 19th of February! I've already talked with the pharmacy and they will be sending my prescritions on the 18th of January. I just cannot believe how fast all of this is happening now. Our dream may eventually come true.

We're Moving Forward

TTC News:

I have had a long and unsuccessful journey on the road to motherhood. We have had 5 miscarriages. I've lost a fallopian tube. And this summer, I was told that I was Post Menopausal. But, we've not given up hope.

We were referred to ACRM, and were told about using Donor Eggs. We've been on the waiting list for an egg donor since August.

Last Thursday, I decided that I needed to check in with the clinic. The girl with whom Brad and I had met was no longer working there. I was devastated. I left a message with my nurse, and the person who was filling in for the Donor Egg Coordinator.

I was teaching my 5th graders at the end of the day, and about 2:45 my cell phone rings. I thought it was my nurse, but the phone number was the main number at the clinic. I called back, and was put through to the person filling in. She said that they had an offer for me, meaning that they had found a donor! She sent me her info sheet and baby pics. I am thrilled. I called Brad on the way home, and by the time I'd gotten there, he'd already called his parents and Gwenn.

I went in yesterday for a trial transfer and a hysteroscopy (ouch) and things were good. They've put me on the pill.

I talked to Bernadette today, and she said I'd probably start meds by the end of the month. So, things are finally moving forward.

Knitting News:

My mother and I started a prayer shawl for my Uncle Doug, using Lion Brand Chenille Thick and Quick in Bordeaux, and size 17's. I'm also working on a lacy ascot from Paton's Karma One book in Lacette (Hint of Rose). It is so pretty. Felted Floral also on the sticks.

This is the Christmas ornament hat I made myself for Christmas. I used Paton's Classic in red, and Lion Brand Lame in silver for the ornament hanger.

This is the potato chip scarf I knit for Daisy. The pattern is from Knit Picks. The yarn is from a Nicky Epstein Kit. It is a 95% wool boucle. The scarf was fun to knit, and amazing to bind off. The number of stitches (720) to bind off is a chore, but to watch the scarf begin to curl as you bind off is so much fun. I also knit a little purse for her out of the same yarn. I'm having quite a time posting that photo.

Three Bags from Sister Susan

These are the Bucket Bags I made for Brad's sisters for Christmas. I used Lion Wool for all of them. I doubled the yarn for the i-cord.

I sent this first bag to Cindy in Connecticut. The colorway is Flower Garden. I used US 11's and cast on 90 stitches, and knit for 15" before the turn row and the decreases.

This bag went to Debbie in California. The colorway is Ocean Blues. I only knit this bag for 12" and it is shorter than the other 2. I love this color, though.

This last bag is for Gwenn in New York. The colorway is Autumn Sunset.

The bag to the left is my second attempt at a bucket bag. I used 10 1/2 needles and cast on 80 stitches. It felted much smaller than I had wanted it to. I have not yet knit the I-cord for this.

This bag was my first attempt at a bucket bag. I cast on 110 stitches and used size 9's. I knit for 20 inches, and it felted down to 14". It is really taller than I had wanted, but I love the colorway of the yarn (Noro Kureyon #95)

Here are the 2 bags side by side. I need to find a happy medium. I'm working on one now in Lion Wool and size 11's. Maybe this one will be the right size.

A Hat for My Mother...My mother, Pokey, came up from St. Simons for Thanksgiving. She got here Wednesday night. We did the turkey thing Thursday, and were to go furniture shopping on Friday. We're about to leave the house when Brad calls. He was going to Monroe MX, and had forgotten his gas can and some other motorcycle things. Well, I said I'd bring him his stuff, knowing, in the back of my mind that if I had to drove to Loganville, that I'd have to take mother to Margaret's Yarns Down Under in Monroe.

She loved it. She saw the cutest felted hats that Margaret had made, and decided that I needed to make one for her. Margaret found the pattern for us, and we picked out her yarn, and Voila! Pokey!

The pattern is Brown Sheep Wool Company's Fabulous Felted Hat. The yarn is Mauch Chunky in Strawberry and Black.

Then, on Saturday, we had to place a special order for the furniture that I wanted. So we got back out. I needed some #11 DPNs to finish her hat. We stopped by Joann's but it was a madhouse. So we went to All That Yarn. Nelsonya had the needles I needed, along with some way too cute little circular needles for making socks. She also had this fabulous yarn that I had to have. Naturally Nazareth in Summer. The pattern is ChicKnits Felted Bucket Hat. It is drying as I type.

Here are the roses I've knit so far for Nicky Epstein's Rose Pillow in the current HOLIDAY issue of VK. Thes roses are knit in Lion Suede. The colors I'm using (top row, L-R) are: eggplant, garnet, orchard, rose, and fuchsia. I have to take a break from the Lion Suede. It is wreaking havoc on my hands. They are getting so dried out! I have 15 flowers to go, and then I knit the pillow. I think it should be quite pretty.

A little blurry, but I think I've got the Stitch Marker Making down pat. These are some that I made tonight. I think they are kinda cute with the little charms. You can't tell much from the photo, but there is a tape measure, scissors, yarn and needles, a button, a spool of thread, and a kitty playing with a ball of yarn.

Not much knitting, yet. Working on Lola ( a hat from Tante Sophie avait un chien), and not on Flower Pillow.

I made the stitch markers for the Switch Marker Swap, and have them ready to ship out tomorrow. I may try to take another photo of these. You really can't see squat.

I've completed 48 rows of a chart of 99 on this pillow. I guess I'm liking it a little better. It's working up a lot faster than I thought it would.

I may stop at Hobby Lobby today after work and get some rosewood 19s for my swatch. Since needles and notions are 1/2 price, it's a good time to do this. I actually bought 29" circular 19s at Margaret's, but I do want some pretty straight ones, too. And I can't pass up that bargain!

Flower Power Progress

Here is my progress on the Large Flower Pillow from Interweave Knits. I've finished row 25 of 99 on the chart. You can kinda see the flower starting.

I went to Margaret's Yarn Down Under tonight to get some yarn to swatch for the Vogue Felted Rose Bag KAL. I got some Mauch Chunky in black and some 19 needles. Janice and I decided that I should swatch and felt and see what happens before I decide how much yarn to get.

I don't have a swift, so I just looped the yarn over the back of a chair. I had to go slow, but it worked. I'm contemplating buying a swift. Joann's has a 40% off coupon right now. It may be worth it.

Meet Patsy Ori-ori-ay. She is my first knitted babe. Her legs have not yet been knit, and she's "nekkid", but she has a dress at the seamstress right now. She is from Claire Garland's book, Knitted Babes. Her skin is DMC Senseo, and her hair is Lion Brand Homespun and Thick and Quick. She has an appointment to get some more highlights. Right now her hair is looking a little too red for me.

Margaret's Yarns Down Under

This is the Yarn I bought from Margaret's Yarns Down Under to send to Ina. It's Malabrigo in Roanoke Gold, and it is the softest yummiest yarn ever!

I went to the most fantabulous yarn shop yesterday. It's called Margaret's Yarns Down under. The shop is in downtown Monroe, Georgia, but seems like it's in Little Five Points or Virginia Highlands. One of my co-workers said it belonged in San Francisco. It's funky and eclectic. It has a fab selection of yarns, and one of the best collections of books I've ever seen. I will be calling on Margaret and Janice often.

Janice was so helpful. We talked blogs, and she has one, too. It's called Knitting, with Dogs.

I love, love, love that shop!

I want to post pics of my treats, but blogger isn't cooperating. Maybe I can post them later.

Here are photos of the finished Mini Skull and Crossbones Tote from Hello Yarns.

I was worried about my new front load High Efficiency Washer fulling the bag. I put it in on Heavy Duty with some of Brad's jeans, and WOW! It really felted down.

The black fibers have intermixed with the white, but I like it that way.

Brad, on the otherhand, said it looked better before. He was just being a big crab this morning.

I'm going to start work on the Suki Shawl with my friend Melissa. We've gotten the pattern ordered from Ina Braun at Tante Sophie avait un chien, and are searching for the yarn. It calls for 6 skeins of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky. We're trying to find the best deal for it. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.
Melissa and I keep finding projects we want to work on. I need to work on some helmetliners, too!

The KAL is behind on our goal of 78 for October. We only have 46, I think. I know that the group has knit more than that, but the poll closes on Monday, and I need to do some knitting!

Yorick and the Hardwood Floors

I had quite a time working on Yorick this weekend, when my DH was doing this. He's putting hardwood floors in our entire upstairs. All by himself. So, my guilty conscious wouldn't let me knit while he was so busy working!

Fortunately, he took a nap later in the day, and I was able to knit away on Yorick, and get him fulled.

Two Thank You Notes for Helmetliners

These make me happy in my heart! My husband thought it was so cool that I got thank you notes from these two servicemen. I do, too. I attach a little note to each helmetliner with washing instructions, and I've included my email address. I had hoped I'd get a response, but really didn't expect to.

I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank you for sending the hats to us over here. They say that the best quality comes in something sent from the heart, and I truely believe that. You would be amazed how much use we will all get out of them over hear...many people, when they think of Iraq, only think of it being hot. Helmetliners Step by Step

To knit a helmetliners, you need:

Approximately 175 yards of 100% wool yarn in appropriate colors (black, charcoal, brown, tan, olive)

* Helmetheads KAL has an extensive list of yarns that work.

US 6 16" circular needles
US 8 16" circular needles
US 8 double point needles
One stitch marker

Directions:

Based on pattern designed by Bonnie Long, Knit Wits, 3419 Chatham Road, Springfield, IL 62704 (217) 698-6100

and Short Row Revision by Bonnie Evans

NECK:
With US 6 needles, cast on 84 stitches loosely.

Place marker. Join in the round. Knit (K2P2) ribbing for:
5" inches for the Original Helmetliner Pattern
or
4 1/2 " for the Short Row Revision Pattern.

Short Row Revision:

Using the larger needles knit 32 stitches and leave them on the larger needle for later. You will have 52 stitches on your smaller needle and will begin knitting back and forth on them for 12 short rows. On the last row, you will K2, P2 across through the last stitch on the smaller needle, picking up the wraps as you come to them, and knitting them together with the stitch beside them.

Leave these 52 stitches on the smaller needle to be worked later.

This is the completed ribbing for Short Row Revision.

To Make HAT Portion

Original Pattern:

With US 8 needles, knit 32 stitches off of smaller needle. (Leave the remaining 52 stitches on the smaller needle.) Cast on an additional 59 stitches for a total of 91 stitches on the larger needles. Place marker, join in the round, and Knit even for 4".

Short Row Revision:

With larger needle, knit the 32 stitches on that needle. Cast on 59 additional stitches, place marker, join in the round, and knit even for 4".

Shaping the crown:

After knitting 4", begin shaping the crown by decreasing.

1st Decrease Row: *Knit 11, K2 tog*, repeat to end of round.

Next Row: Knit even. (84 sts)

2nd Decrease Row: *Knit 10, K2tog*, repeat to end of round.

Next Row: Knit even. (77 sts)

3rd Decrease Row: *Knit 9, K2tog*, repeat to end of round.

Next Row: Knit even. (70 sts)

Continue decreases as established.

Change to DPN when necessary. Continue decreases in this manner until you get to K2, K2tog. After this, decrease every round until...
7 stitches remain.
Cut yarn 8-9" long, feed through remaining stitches,

and weave in on the wrong side. The hat portion is now completed. Ribbing Around the Face:

Using the smaller needle with 52 stitches on it, pick up an additional 60 sts for a total of 112 sts around the face.

Place a marker, join in the round, and (K2P2) for 1".

For the SRR pattern, you will pick the wraps on the right side and knit together with the stitch next to them on the first row of face ribbing.

On the last row of ribbing, knit as follows:

(K2, P2tog) 2x; K2, P2 over the next 34 sts, ending with a K2; P2tog, K2, P2tog; K2, P2, K2; P2tog, K2, P2tog; K2, P2 over next 42 sts, ending with a K2; P2tog, K2, P2tog; K2, P2.

Bind off in ribbing pattern and weave in tail.

I got some K1C2 Parfait Solids in Jet and Loden, and some Araucania Nature Wool in Peat. Lovely! I need to get the Aruacania wound into a cake, but I forgot to.

How to Knit a Helmetliner...Part Deux...A work in Progress

I seem to be missing some photos. So these are your steps. When you finish your ribbing, take your size 8 needles and knit across 32 stitches. Leave your size 6 needles on the ribbing. You will use them later.

K2 P2 for 5". Knit Short Rows if desired.

The above photo shows completed ribbing with short rows.

Knit across those 32 stitches on your 8's. Cast on 59 more stitches.

Join in the round and knit 4 inches.

Begin decreases.

Change to DPN when necessary.

Continue decreases until 7 stitches remain.

Run yarn through remaining seven stitches.

Weave in.

Using your Size 6 needles, pick up 60 stitches along the cap.

Join and K2P2 for 1 inch.

Decrease according to the pattern, and bind off.

The completed project.
